Windows 7 - Show Window Contents While Dragging - UPDATED

So a week or two later an update on the "show window contents while dragging" tip I gave.  It doesn't work.  Vista doesn't honour the setting and just keeps dropping it.  A restart does work as I assume the registry setting which hasn't changed (how could it with permissions revoked) gets reloaded, but that's no fun.

I left it at that point thinking, "I'm about to move to Windows 7, that'll fix it surely", upgraded and all was fine for a few days.  Then the dreaded border box and no contents.  I don't know why it bugs me so much, it's just so Windows 95 though, there is no reason for it and it's one of those rare beasts, a problem with no resolution through a google search.

I've been doing some ad-hoc coding recently just to rustle up a few reporting/maintenance web pages for a team at a client site to manage data in a table in a nice friendly fashion rather than opening the table in SQL Server Enterprise Manager and editing live!

Hit the usual problems with GridViews and other controls in that they never seem to quite do exactly what you want.  But with the beauty of inheritance, why not make them do what you want instead.  I shamelessly borrowed some code from here but being a casual geek, my language of choice is the ever handy VB.NET so a little conversion was required.

New Cloud Hosting

After months of poor performance and limited control over the configuration of our web site and supporting web apps, we decided it was time to take web hosting seriously but also to try out the "Cloud".

Elastic Hosts are one of only a handful of cloud providers based in the UK, critical for speedy service to UK and European consumers.  Still in a "Beta" phase the service is cheap, simple and does what it needs to without some of the features but critically most of the costs of some larger rivals such as Amazon.

Windows Vista - Show window contents while dragging

I've been having this problem for some time, it's not important and the cosmetic appeal of Windows Vista Aero scheme is hardly business critical, I just hate not knowing why something doesn't work as expected in Windows.

The problem is, every now and again (possibly 3-4 times a week) at unpredictable times, Vista decides I don't really want to view windows contents while dragging the window really and permanently nobbles the option.  I have to go back into Display settings to re-enable and that hacks me off.

Talend - Open Source ETL and Integration

Talend is a newcomer to the market of ETL and Integration packages with one clear distinction from its main rivals...it's free.

Open Source Software is undoubtedly appealing to many businesses and particularly at the moment when IT departments are facing slashed budgets but no let up in demand.  Talend is a credible alternative to the likes of Informatica's PowerCenter, IBM WebSphere DataStage, Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services and tools from Business Objects' owner SAP.  With full wizard driven interface while still allowing underlying programmability it looks to be an excellent package so far although we've had limited opportunity to deploy it so far.
